Laura Bush Describes a Typical Day

Laura Bush

He may be the President of the United States, but George W. Bush is not too busy to fetch his wife Laura her morning coffee, the First Lady reveals. Speaking to a group of students in Vienna, Austria, on Wednesday, Mrs. Bush was asked to describe a typical day back at the White House, the Washington Post reports.

"We get up about 5:30 a.m.," she said. "The President gets up and goes in and gets the coffee and brings it back to me in bed. Very nice of him." The family dogs, Barney and Miss Beazley, are then walked, and the first couple read the morning papers over their coffee until about 6:30, she said.

Then it's off to work, with the President in his West Wing office by 7:00, while the First Lady settles into the East Wing at about 9:00. "It's sort of like living above the shop," Mrs. Bush told the students.

After the work day, the couple reconvene in the residence for an early dinner – between 5:30 and 6:00 – often with daughters Barbara and Jenna. "One of them was just living with us, but she just has moved out," said Mrs. Bush, referring to Barbara, who has relocated to New York.

"The other one lives in an apartment and is teaching school; she's a third-grade schoolteacher." After dinner, the Bushes may catch a movie in the White House screening room, she said, "but we do go to bed early."
