Celebrity News:Spelling Family: Tori's Claims 'Hurtful'

Actress Tori Spelling with parents producer Aaron Spelling & wife Candy at the 15th Carousel of Hope Ball at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills.

A statement issued on behalf of the Spelling family Thursday criticizes daughter Tori's remarks following the death of her father Aaron last week. "We are deeply saddened that, during our time of loss and grief, we are forced to respond to the media frenzy caused by the mean-spirited and surprising comments made by Tori to the press, just two days after the passing of Aaron," the statement, issued by Spelling family rep Kevin Sasaki, begins.

"As we try to honor his memory with love and respect, the sudden media frenzy she has created at this sensitive time is hurtful and very disturbing," it continues.

"Aaron's legacy deserved pure and unadulterated tribute and recognition which, sadly, has been tainted. "Everyone deals with grief in a different way, and since Tori chose not to be here at that time, we believe she is having a harder time dealing with that loss.

We understand how difficult it might have been for her to be here, and, perhaps, more difficult for her after she arrived.

Aaron loved both his children with all his heart, and he understood how hard it was for her."

Tori Spelling had no comment. It was unclear whether her brother Randy, 27, had any part in the statement.

Aaron Spelling died at age 83 on June 23. In the new issue of PEOPLE magazine, Tori says she first learned of his passing "when a friend who had heard on the news" e-mailed her Blackberry.

"I was devastated," Tori, 33, tells PEOPLE. "I thought I had some time (to see him). And I was saddened that the news had not come from my mother." Two weeks before Aaron's death, Tori had visited her father and introduced him to her new husband, Dean McDermott.

The reunion marked the end of a 9-month rift between father and daughter, during which neither one spoke to or saw the other. But the real bad blood was between Tori and her mother Candy, 60, who a source close to the family says was upset by her portrayal in Tori's VH1 sitcom So NoTORIous.

For her part, Tori tells PEOPLE that "an outside party wedged this close family apart," referring to Candy's close friend Mark Nathanson, 66. Sasaki insists that Candy and Nathanson are just friends.

Star 'Will Not Denigrate Ms. Walters'

Reynolds on Larry King Live on June 29.

In her first TV interview since leaving The View, Star Jones Reynolds said she would not engage in a war of words with former co-host Barbara Walters. "I will not denigrate Ms. Walters. That's not who I am," Reynolds told CNN's Larry King on Thursday.

"I have learned from that woman ... as much about television as I did about the law from my mentor, the late Johnnie Cochran." She did, however, express dismay that Walters had asked Rosie O'Donnell to join The View just days after Reynolds was told her contract would not be renewed.

Reynolds termed the maneuver "strange in terms of timing." O'Donnell had previously criticized Reynolds about her weight loss and other issues. "She went on a very public attack on me and my family," Reynolds told King. "She talked about my weight. ... I was so shocked by the viciousness of it."

Reynolds also revealed that her bosses at ABC encouraged to lie about the reason for her departure from The View. "They said, 'You can make up a story,' " she said. "The audience didn't deserve for me to make up a story. That's not fair."

Walters has said she was "blindsided" by Reynolds's on-air announcement on Tuesday that she was leaving the show, and was further stunned to learn that Reynolds had revealed to PEOPLE that she'd been fired.

On Wednesday's episode, Walters announced that Reynolds would not be returning to the program. King read Reynolds a statement from ABC claiming that Reynolds had been dismissed from the show immediately because, after her remarks to PEOPLE, the network could not trust her to tell the truth if she remained on the air.

Reynolds said she was "having trouble reconciling" that charge with the fact that ABC had previously asked her to lie. On another topic, King asked Reynolds whether she'd had surgery to lose 150 lbs.

She said only, "Because of my health … I needed a full-scale medical intervention, and my doctors had to step in to save my life."

On Friday's Today show, Reynolds said she was weathering the storm "thanks to the love and support of the fans, the viewers, my friends and family." She added, "The truth is very freeing." Walters and The View co-executive producer Bill Geddie declined to appear on the show with her, Today's Al Roker said.

Later asked by Roker, who chronicled his own gastric bypass surgery for the public, if she had anything to say about her own significant weight loss, Reynolds would only thank everyone for their prayers.

J.Lo Video Thief No. 2 Cops Plea

Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony arrive at an awards dinner, June 6, 2006, in the Century City section of Los Angeles. A New Jersey man who was arrested after he and an accomplice tried to sell the couple's stolen wedding video back to them for $1 million pleaded guilty Thursday, June 29, 2006, in New York to attempted grand larceny.

The other mastermind behind the great J.Lo wedding video caper has owned up to his crime.
Steven Wortman, 49, pleaded guilty Thursday to a misdemeanor count of attempted grand larceny for his role in a scheme to sell a stolen video of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony's June 2004 nuptials back to the couple for the bargain price of $1 million.

Wortman, who was also facing charges for conspiracy and possessing stolen property, received three years' probation in exchange for his plea.

The purloined video was in a laptop computer that disappeared along with Anthony's Cadillac Escalade while it was parked on a New Jersey street in October 2005.

Authorities recovered the stolen car, but the computer stayed missing until Wortman and his partner in crime, 31-year-old Tito Moses, rang up Anthony's production company to discuss a selling price for the laptop. An undercover detective intercepted the call and eventually negotiated Moses and Wortman's original million-dollar asking price down to $250,000 before arranging a meeting with them at a diner. When the would-be extortionists showed up for the tradeoff, police arrested them on the spot.

Moses pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted grand larceny on June 14 in exchange for a guarantee that he'd only serve between 18 months and three years in prison. Wortman, who, according to prosecutors, threatened to destroy the wedding video when the Lopez-Anthony camp refused to pony up $ 1 million, originally entered a not guilty plea but apparently decided he had best get with the program.

When New York Justice Bonnie Wittner asked Wortman whether he and Moses made phone calls demanding money from Lopez and Anthony between Dec. 20 and 27 last year "in exchange for not releasing [the video] to the general public," Wortman replied: "Sorrowfully, yes."
He is scheduled to report to probation officials on Aug. 4.

Wittner has held off on sentencing Moses, saying that she'll wait until he is sentenced in a related case pertaining to Anthony's stolen SUV and that he will be allowed to serve the two sentences concurrently.

While Lopez was able to stay well enough away from these NYC-based criminal proceedings, a civil matter moving forward in Los Angeles has been keeping her busy instead.

A hearing is set for Friday regarding a preliminary injunction the singer-actress is seeking against a Lopez expose that her first husband, Ojani Noa, is supposedly planning to write.

According to J.Lo's petition to keep the book out of sight, Noa wanted $5 million to keep his pen capped and, since she refused to fork over any money, he's now prepared to dish up some pretty explicit details about their relationship and her past exploits (as he remembers them, of course).

Lil' Kim to Be Released From Prison

Rap artist Lil' Kim arrives to federal court in lower Manhattan Friday, June 18, 2004. The entertainer, sentenced in September for lying about a shootout outside a hip-hop radio station, will be released from prison on Monday.

Lil' Kim says she'll be celebrating Independence Day early this year. The rapper, who was sentenced in September to a year and a day in prison for lying about a shootout outside a hip-hop radio station, is being released Monday, the day before July Fourth.

"I am thrilled to be coming home," Lil' Kim said Thursday in a statement issued by her publicist, Tracy Nguyen. "I thank all my fans for all their letters, as well as my family and friends for all their support throughout the past 10 months."

The entertainer, whose real name is Kimberly Jones, began serving her time at a federal detention center in Philadelphia on Sept. 19. Her lawyer, L. Londell McMillan, noted then that she could be released early for good behavior.

"She has accepted responsibility and handled herself in an exemplary manner," McMillan said Thursday.

The rapper, who will remain under house arrest for 30 days after her release, was convicted of lying to a federal grand jury and in the subsequent trial.

The case stemmed from a gun battle that erupted outside WQHT-FM, known as Hot 97, when Lil' Kim's entourage crossed paths with a rival rap group, Capone-N-Noreaga, whose song "Bang, Bang" contains an insult to her from rival Foxy Brown. One man was hurt in the shootout that followed.

Lil' Kim, who won a Grammy in 2001 for her part in the hit remake of "Lady Marmalade," maintained she hadn't noticed two of her close friends who later pleaded guilty to gun charges at the scene of the shootout. But jurors at her trial saw radio station security photos that depicted one of them opening a door for her, and witnesses said they saw her at the station with both of them.

Charlize Theron Receives Award

Celebrity News and Media Gossip

Actress Charlize Theron, recipient of the "Spirit of Independence" award, arrives for The Los Angeles Film Festival's second annual Spirit of Independence Award Ceremony in Los Angeles, Wednesday, June 28, 2006.

Charlize Theron, who has mainly acted in big-studio movies, has been awarded the Los Angeles Film Festival's Spirit of Independence award.

"She is a big movie star," said awards director Dawn Hudson at Wednesday night's ceremony. "But what we love about her is that she's made interesting choices in her career. She's taken on challenging roles in her career when other movie stars don't."

Theron's films range from her Oscar-winning portrayal of Aileen Wuornos in 2003's low-budget "Monster" to last year's big-studio flop "Aeon Flux."

Theron, 30, told AP Television News that she takes roles in both independent and studio movies because there are audiences for each.

"I think the biggest misconception about independent filmmaking is that if you do those movies, you'll always be thought of as that kind of actor," she said. "And then you don't get to do the other things. And it's not true."

Moviegoers were introduced to Theron in 1996's "2 Days in the Valley." By 1999, she was a headliner, starring in the Oscar-nominated "The Cider House Rules." Her screen credits also include "The Italian Job" and "North Country."

During Wednesday night's ceremony, Theron recounted her life and career. She began as a model in her native South Africa before coming to the United States with the Joffrey Ballet.
Theron wearing a short brown dress and Manolo Blahnik shoes said she wasn't a great dancer, "but if you put me on a stage and told me I was a swan and that I was dying, I ... died."

The award came one day after Theron hosted a silent auction that raised about $140,000 for her African Outreach Project. Among the items: a bra she wore in "Monster."

"I outbid the person who bid on the bra, and I feel horrible to admit that now," she said. "But it was just too special to me and I find myself incredibly sexy in it."
