PETA perfect Leona Lewis

Leona Lewis has been named Person of the Year by PETA.

The animal rights organisation - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - has recognised the vegetarian singer's commitment to animal welfare after she reportedly refused to open department store Harrods' winter sale because the shop sells fur.

PETA's Europe Director Robbie LeBlanc said: "Leona Lewis is admired for her beautiful voice, but it's her kindness to animals that makes her a superstar in our book."

Earlier this year, the campaign group crowned the 'Run' singer - who is working on an accessories line of vegan shoes and bags - Sexiest Vegetarian.

Lat year's Person of the Year was Sir Paul McCartney's fashion designer daughter Stella McCartney.

Leona, who hasn't eaten meat since she was 12, has previously said: "I am totally against animal cruelty. I am vegetarian so I don't have clothes, shoes, or bags made from leather or suede or any animal products. I'm on a mission."

Leona Lewis has the fastest selling single digital release

The new single from Leona Lewis has become the fastest-selling digital release, according to the singer's representative.

Some 69,244 people downloaded the cover of Snow Patrol's Run in the first two days since it became available.

The success of the track has eclipsed the previous record of 51,857 downloads sold in a week, set by 'American Boy' by Estelle and Kanye West – itself beating a previous Leona Lewis record for her single, A Moment Like This.

The singer, from London, sang the song on BBC Radio 1 and recently performed it on The X Factor.

The track is already heading to the top of the single sale charts, outselling its nearest rival – Take That's Greatest Day – by three to one.

William Hill has her at 10-1 to become Christmas Number One but the favourite for that honour remains whoever wins X Factor winner singing a version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.

Lewis' label Sony BMG initially refused to release 'Run' as a single, instead making it available on a reissue of her 2007 debut album, 'Spirit'.

The song had been introduced by presenter Dermot O'Leary as "her next single" when she performed it on X Factor and fans lobbied the company to change its mind.

A source at the record company said managers were "stunned by the reaction" of the public. "They've seen sense and bowed to pressure," the source said.

'Lonely' Leona Lewis

Leona Lewis says she gets "very lonely".

British singing sensation Leona - who reached number one in the UK and US singles charts with her second single 'Bleeding Love' - says despite her newfound celebrity status, she still feels isolated.

Leona, who won TV talent show 'The X Factor' in 2006, said: "It can be very lonely. Particularly in Los Angeles. When I was making my first album 'Spirit' it was really, really lonely because it was just me and an A and R [Artist and Repertoire] guy.

"Because of the time difference, you're in a different mindset when you're talking to people. I'd talk to people late at night Los Angeles time and they were just waking up so would be a bit tired."

Leona, 23, also revealed despite her continued global success and being lauded by stars worldwide, she is still convinced she will wake up one day to find the fairytale is over.

She added to Britain's Daily Mail newspaper: "I get scared of things not panning out the way I want them to. I wonder what I'd do if anything happened to my voice. I must be one of the most paranoid people I know. I'll miss nights out because I can't be talking over loud music. I get panicked in case something happens."

Leona's debut album 'Spirit' was reissued this week and includes bonus tracks.

Leona Lewis hopes to join X-Factor judging panel

Leona Lewis has revealed that she hopes to join The X Factor judging panel in a few years' time.

The singer won the ITV1 reality show in 2006 and has gone on to become a worldwide superstar.

But Leona says she'll never forget her roots.

‘I still love The X Factor,’ she tells The Sun. ‘I Sky Plus every episode.

'Maybe I could go back on it as a judge. Not yet, but in a few years. But I think I’d be a bit lenient – I’d be crying every few seconds!’

Leona, 23, says she thinks new recruit Cheryl Cole, 25, has been doing a brilliant job.

‘Cheryl is wicked,’ she tells the Daily Star. ‘I’ve met her before and think she brings something different to the show.

‘She is quite emotional and she has come from a show similar to The X Factor, so she knows what the contestants are going through.

'I think she's done really well.’

Cheryl, 25, won a place in Girls Aloud when she appeared on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002.

Leona Lewis: The X-Factor winner loves her privacy

Leona Lewis hopes she doesn’t become as famous as Madonna.

The X Factor winner, 23, reckons she’d lose her privacy if she became a worldwide icon.

‘I don’t know if I’d like to be that big,’ she tells The Sun. ‘I like to lead a relatively normal life.

'I like the normality of being able to go to the shops, go out with my friends.

‘Then again I love the way huge stars like that have been able to connect with so many people and make so many albums of great music, so that’s what I want as well.

'But I think it’s a balance. I don’t want to go off the rails.’

Leona Lewis' fur frustration

Leona Lewis says people who wear fur have "something seriously wrong with them".

The 'Bleeding Love' singer, who is a staunch vegetarian, can't understand why anyone would want to wear a coat made from animal skin.

She said: "It's such an old school way of doing things. I can't begin to imagine that people who know all these animals have been killed to make a coat can still wear it. There must be something seriously wrong with them."

Leona, 23, recently turned down a reported £1 million to open exclusive London department store Harrods' sale because the shop sells fur.

She said: It's such an old school way of doing things
Although she is keen to point out she does not dislike Harrods, Leona claims she could not accept money to condone something she hates.

She added to Britain's Hello! magazine: "I don't have anything against the store or the owner - all I am against is fur. I think it's totally cruel and I can't endorse or support anything related to that as it's against my beliefs, no matter what you pay me.

"I don't have any bad feelings towards Harrods, I just have feelings against them selling fur - it's wrong and you have to stand up for that."

Claws out in battle for No1

THE mother of all chart battles kicks off a week today.
Pop divas BRITNEY SPEARS, CHRISTINA AGUILERA, LEONA LEWIS and BEYONCE are releasing singles on the same day.

I’m dubbing November 3 D-Day in honour of the four babes as they go head to head.

Her new offering, Womanizer, is another precision-tooled pop rocket. The video has her writhing naked in a sauna and, surprise surprise, is getting loads of airplay.

I can also exclusively reveal her eagerly awaited X Factor slot will be on November 29. Britney’s one time arch-rival Christina is issuing the title track from Keeps Gettin’ Better, her Greatest Hits collection, and it’s a stomping glam-pop banger.

Forgive Me sees Leona ditching gut-busting ballads for an up-tempo R&B number.
Glory

Finally, Beyonce’s track If I Were A Boy, which is released digitally, is probably the most surprising of the lot.

She’s already ahead on points thanks to the stunning promo shot shown above, and has produced a belting but serious ballad about the (alleged) faults of the male species.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: “We haven’t had a heavyweight chart battle like this for a while. It’s wide open but you have to fancy Britney, perhaps just ahead of Leona.”

In terms of album sales Britney is way ahead of the pack with an extraordinary 76million under her belt.

Beyonce has sold 63million, though half were with former group DESTINY’S CHILD.

Christina is next with 42million while Leona has notched up three million sales, for her debut Spirit — but she is the biggest-selling artist of the year so far Stateside.

Rest assured, I’ll bring you the latest from the epic battle as it happens.

I’ve got my fingers crossed for the home-grown talent though.

I’d love to see Leona trounce her US rivals..

Leona Lewis is excited about returning to the Uk this week

LEONA LEWIS is excited about returning to the UK this week — to catch up on EastEnders.

The X Factor winner earned the night’s biggest cheer at a charity gig in Las Vegas this weekend, hosted by singer JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE.

But after the show, her mind turned to Walford.

Leona said: “It was a great night for a great cause. But I can’t wait to get home, for some home-cooked food and to watch EastEnders.”

Are you going to fill her in on the latest grim Albert Square goings-on, or shall I?

Leona Lewis is to release a Christmas single

Leona Lewis is to release a Christmas single – putting her head to head with the next X Factor winner.

The singer, 23, who won the ITV talent show in 2006, is aiming for the coveted No1 slot with a cover of Snow Patrol’s hit Run.

‘Leona is covering Run and bringing it out just in time for Christmas,’ Snow Patrol bassist Paul Wilson reveals.

Snow Patrol are also releasing a Christmas single.

‘Really Simon Cowell doesn’t lose,’ an insider tells The Daily Star. ‘If Leona’s No1 or if The X Factor winner is, he’ll benefit from both.’

For the past 4 years the Xmas No1 slot been filled by the winner of The X Fact.

Leona Lewis takes stage in New York for her first full gig

LEONA LEWIS finally took to the stage for her first full gig since winning The X Factor almost two years ago – and bleeding nailed it.

The singer chose New York for her first proper set at an exclusive invitation-only show in the brilliantly named Gotham Hall on Wednesday night.

I sent Bizarre man Pete Samson to witness the performance at the Hennessy whisky party – and he was the only British journo there.

It was clear from the moment she walked on stage in New York that the humble home-bird has taken flight and is showing her full plumage as a sexy superstar. The fact that her single Bleeding Love went to No1 in 30 countries would have helped her to spread her wings. After the show she said: “I had a great time. “It’s good to do a proper set. I can’t wait to do it again.”

From opener Better In Time, she gave both barrels in the grand venue fit for a Batman movie.

But it was her worldwide No1 smash, Bleeding Love, that sent them wild. Its throbbing bass and huge vocal sounded more at home in the US than the UK.

Maybe that applies to Leona the superstar too.

Leona Lewis rejected 1 million offer for Harrods gig

Leona Lewis is said to have rejected a £1 million offer to open the summer sale at Harrods.

The X Factor winner
, 23, was approached by owner Mohammed Al Fayed about appearing at the event in June.

But the strict vegetarian refused the offer because the department store sells fur.

‘I'm totally against animal cruelty,’ she tells the Daily Mail. 'I don't have clothes, shoes or bags made from any animal products.'

Harrods is the only department store in the UK that continues to sell fur and is regularly targeted by animal cruelty campaigners.

A spokesperson for the company declined to comment.

Fairy wings designed by Leona Lewis are being auctioned on eBay

Fairy wings designed by Leona Lewis are being auctioned on eBay.

Disney asked the singer, 23, to customise the wings to raise cash for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.

And she was more than happy to help - decorating them in pink fluff and gold glitter.

‘I loved the idea of the Disney Fairy Wing Auction and was really pleased to be able to help and contribute to such a great cause,’ she tells Now Online.

‘[The hospital] obviously does such an important job and the Disney Fairy Wings are a really fun way to raise money for such an admirable charity.

‘I’ll keep my fingers crossed that lots of people bid for my wings on the Disney Fairies eBay page – I’d love to see them raise something for Great Ormond Street Hospital.’

The auction, which also features wings designed by supermodel Agyness Deyn, 25, and Vernon Kay, runs until 18 September.

But The X Factor winner, 22, says she's no diva.
