Charlize Theron has been made a United Nations Messenger Of Peace.

The actress, who follows in the footsteps on George Clooney, 47, and Michael Douglas, 64, will focus on ending violence against women.

'This is something that has been very dear to me, and disturbing to me for a long time,' she says.

Charlize, 33, is already involved with charities in her native South Africa, where she has founded HIV initiative the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project.

Actress jokes of having secret children

Charlize Theron says she has given birth to seven children without anyone knowing.

The actress was being quizzed about her personal life in a TV interview when she made the quip.

‘Okay, let me break it to you,’ she said, leaning forward on the couch. ‘I actually have seven children nobody knows about. [They live] in a cave.’

But joking aside, Charlize, 33, admits she would love to start her own family with longterm boyfriend Stuart Townsend, 35.

'I always wanted to be a mom because I have always had such a close relationship with my own mom,' she tells Us Weekly.

They pair have been dating for six years.

Rihanna kicks off New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week kicked off in an explosion of style and sounds on Friday as a host of some of the trendiest stars around flocked to Radio City Music Hall for the fifth Fashion Rocks event.

Making her mark was stylish Barbadian Rihanna. The beautiful Umbrella singer looked gorgeous in a black ruffled Monique Lhuiller frock at her arrival. She later donned a glitzy leotard to wow the audience with a showgirl performance. Black-Eyed Peas singer Fergie, meanwhile, went for boho chic with a Gucci outfit featuring an ethnic-inspired blouse.

Fellow songstress Beyonce donned several glamorous looks for her time in the spotlight. Performing with SexyBack star Justin Timberlake, the former Destiny's Child singer sparkled in a Jean-Paul Gaultier catsuit with plunging neckline. Then it was a change of look – with short blonde wig – with a classy Zuhair Murad cocktail dress, in this season's key mustard colour.

Not to be outdone, the stars of the silver screen were also showing their style credentials. Fresh from watching the catwalks was Charlize Theron, casually chic in tight fitting trousers matched with a silver blazer she had earlier seen on the Rag And Bone runway that day.

And Hilary Swank was lovely in lilac in a one-shouldered couture dress from Givenchy.

Charlize Theron Brightened Up The Venice Film Festival

Beautiful Hollywood actress Charlize Theron brightened up the Venice Film Festival on Friday as she arrived for the photocall for her latest flick wearing a vibrant fuchsia Versace dress.

Teaming the outfit with black buckle heels and sunglasses, South Africa-born Charlize smiled broadly as she stepped off the boat before posing for waiting photographers. The folds and detailing on the dress, taken from Versace's 2009 resort collection, emphasised the Oscar-winning actress' enviable figure as she got to work promoting The Burning Plain.

And the Monster star's passion for fashion did not stop there. In an on-trend one-shouldered embellished number from the same fashion house, Charlize worked the red carpet at the film's premiere later that day.

Also starring LA Confidential actress Kim Basinger, The Burning Plain is a multi-part story about a mother and daughter trying to bond. Charlize not only stars in the movie, one of five US entries up for the festival's Golden Lion best film award, but also worked as its executive producer.

“Battle in Seattle” hits theaters in limited release on September 19th and also stars Woody Harrelson, Andre Benjamin, Channing Tatum, Ray Liotta, and Michelle Rodriguez.
